CBR954RR swingarm
- January 25th, 2010
Yes .. I know. VFR’s are famous for the single-sided swingarm developed in partnerships with Elf.
Yes they look great, make wheel changing a breeze and leave plenty of room for exhaust tubing etc.
But .. they are heavy, VERY heavy. In the order of several times the weight of a conventional extruded/welded alloy rear wheel swingarm. And they have to be. You don’t get to take something away without having to put something back.
CBR954RR swingarms also look great, will fit into the VFR chassis (they run VFR swingarms in CBR’s) and will save a number of kilograms. But it will require some reworking of the rear cylinder exhaust header tubes.
More on this idea later.

Hi, luv the idea of ditching the heavy bulky std single sided swingarm for some thing lighter, my question is do you know if the 954RR rear arm will slot straight into a 6th generation (pre vtec) Vfr800 frame and does have to be a 954RR or are all 954 cbr’s RR? look forward to your advice and updates. Cheers.
My understanding is that it should be pretty much a direct transfer. The VFR swingarm is often used in 929/954 and other honda’s and is a simple fit so the other way should be easy. the only complication will be rear exhaust header clearances but some creative pipe work should fix that.
What I’m about to muck around with here is fitting a late model 600RR swingarm, ie: not mounted through shock/spring to the upper frame at all.
I do believe it is possible and will be having a go at it soon.
Good luck with it.
Cheers,
Dave.
@Angus
Apologies Angus, I didn’t read your entire question.
The pre-vtec is the 5th gen yeah? I’m getting confused. Either way they will have the same clearances and swingarm mounting widths etc as the vtec.
With late model swingarms things were the same config up until the 2004 CBR1000rr when honda went for the internally contained spring/shock in the swingarm and no mounting to the upper frame. These are no good as the swingarm pivot is a single contained section from left to right whereas vfr and earlier cbr are a split swingarm bearing pivot, ie: separate left/right bearing sections.
Anything CBR929/954 is pretty much the same mounting as VFR. Some small differences such as swingarm length variation but otherwise very similar and similar linkages that will match up.
